Kotayk Region
Mountains, Forests, and Year-Round Recreation

Rich in forests, alpine meadows, and mineral springs, Kotayk is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and wellness travelers alike. The mineral water resorts of Hankavan, Arzni, and Arzakan have long been known for their healing springs, while the mountain resort town of Tsakhkadzor welcomes visitors throughout the year with modern hotels, cozy guesthouses, scenic hiking trails, a cable car, and one of Armenia's premier ski resorts. Nature lovers can also hike Mount Hatis, whose slopes burst into colorful wildflowers in late spring and early summer.
A Journey Through History

Kotayk is home to some of Armenia's most remarkable cultural treasures. Near Nor Geghi, archaeologists uncovered evidence of an early Stone Age settlement dating back approximately 350,000 years. The region's most iconic landmark is the 1st-century Garni Temple, the only surviving Greco-Roman pagan temple in Armenia.

Nearby stands the magnificent Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose churches and chapels are partially carved into the surrounding cliffs. For centuries, the monastery safeguarded the Holy Lance—the spear believed to have pierced Christ's side during the Crucifixion—before it was transferred to the Treasury Museum of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Another architectural gem is the medieval Kecharis Monastery, beautifully set amid the forests of Tsakhkadzor.
Authentic Flavors of Kotayk

Kotayk's cuisine reflects the richness of its mountain landscapes and rural traditions. Local restaurants and family guesthouses serve hearty Armenian specialties prepared with fresh regional ingredients. Taste seasonal salads and pan-fried wild herbs gathered from the mountains, creamy tanapour made with wheat and khnotsi butter, emmer wheat pilaf, homemade arishta noodles, lentil, bean, and pea soups, pokhindz porridge, tolma, kyufta, barbecue, khashlama, and bozbash. Complete your meal with fragrant herbal teas made from thyme, mint, rosehip, or hawthorn, followed by traditional sweets such as gata, honey and pokhindz halva, sujukh, and an assortment of sun-dried fruits.
