Syunik Region

Syunik is one of Armenia’s most breathtaking regions, where spectacular natural landscapes blend seamlessly with a rich historical and cultural heritage. As the country's southernmost province, it serves as Armenia’s gateway to Iran and is renowned for its remarkable diversity of landscapes and climate zones.

From the warm valleys of Meghri and the forested mountains of Kapan to the alpine meadows of Goris, Syunik showcases the full beauty of Armenia’s nature. The region encompasses the towns of Sisian, Goris, Kapan, and Meghri, each with its own unique charm, history, and character.

History Carved in Stone

Syunik is a true open-air museum, home to monuments that span thousands of years of history.

A visit to the ancient megalithic complex of Zorats Karer, dating back to the Bronze Age, is a must. Equally impressive is Mount Ughtasar, where thousands of prehistoric petroglyphs, carved around 5000 BC, offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of ancient civilizations.

One of the region’s greatest treasures is the Tatev Monastery, built between the 9th and 15th centuries. Visitors can reach the monastery aboard the famous Wings of Tatev (TaTever) aerial tramway, officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's longest reversible cable car.

Towns Full of Character

The historic center of Goris and the old quarter of Meghri preserve the distinctive architecture and atmosphere of Armenian towns from the late 19th century. Their stone houses, charming streets, and timeless ambiance invite visitors to step back in time.

Just outside Goris lies the remarkable cave settlement of Khndzoresk. Crossing its iconic suspension bridge rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the dramatic gorge and the ancient cave dwellings.

Living Craft Traditions

Traditional craftsmanship continues to thrive in many villages throughout Syunik. Visitors can meet skilled artisans engaged in textile weaving, carpet making, stone carving, khachkar (cross-stone) craftsmanship, woodworking, and pottery—keeping centuries-old traditions alive for future generations.

Hospitality and the Flavors of Syunik

The villages of Syunik are renowned for their warm hospitality and authentic cuisine. Cozy family-run restaurants offer traditional dishes prepared according to recipes passed down through generations, including: kyalagosh; ghaurma; regional-style Tolma; summer Khashlama with vegetables; Halim; dishes made from the famous Goris beans; ghapama; homemade cheese aged underground in clay jars and flavored with local herbs.

The region is also famous for its traditional fruit spirits, especially the mulberry vodka produced in the village of Karahunj.
