Symphony of Stones

“Symphony of Stones” is one of the most remarkable natural wonders of Armenia, located in the Azat River Gorge just a few minutes’ drive from Garni. This magnificent rock formation consists of thousands of perfectly shaped hexagonal basalt columns aligned so precisely that they resemble giant organ pipes or a carefully designed architectural composition.

These columns were formed millions of years ago as a result of volcanic activity. As the lava flows slowly cooled and contracted, natural cracks appeared in the rock, creating ideal geometric shapes.

Situated in the Azat Gorge, the “Symphony of Stones” impresses visitors not only with its geological uniqueness but also with its surrounding scenery: steep cliffs, green slopes, and the sound of the river create a feeling of complete harmony with nature. At different times of the day, the basalt changes its shades—from cold gray to warm brownish tones—making this place especially attractive for photographers and travelers.

A walk along the path beside the columns allows visitors to closely observe their astonishing regularity and feel the true scale of this natural phenomenon. The site is part of the protected Azat Gorge area and is one of the most visited natural attractions in the Kotayk region. The “Symphony of Stones” is not just a beautiful landscape, but a vivid example of how the forces of nature can create forms as precise as human architecture.
