Shirak Region

Nestled in the northwestern corner of Armenia, bordering Georgia and Turkey, Shirak Province is a region where dramatic landscapes, ancient history, and authentic traditions come together. From the artistic streets of Gyumri to medieval monasteries and untouched natural wonders, Shirak offers travelers a unique glimpse into Armenia's rich heritage.

Discover the Landscapes of Shirak

Shirak is known for its vast volcanic plateau, cool climate, and breathtaking scenery. Winters are snowy and cold, while summers remain pleasantly mild, making the region an attractive destination throughout the year.

Nature lovers will enjoy exploring:

  • Lake Arpi National Park – one of Armenia's most important protected areas, home to rare bird species and alpine meadows.

  • Trchkan Waterfall – considered one of the country's most beautiful waterfalls, surrounded by lush nature.

  • Mount Aragats – Armenia's highest mountain, whose northern slopes extend into the Shirak region.

  • Akhuryan River – forming part of the natural border with Turkey and creating impressive gorges.

The region is also famous for its volcanic landscapes, where volcanic stones such as tuff and pumice have shaped both the scenery and the architecture.

A Journey Through Thousands of Years of History

Shirak has been inhabited since prehistoric times and preserves remarkable archaeological and architectural treasures.

Among its most significant historical sites are:

  • Horom Citadel – an ancient settlement dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.

  • Beniamin Archaeological Site – offering valuable insights into early civilizations.

  • Marmashen Monastery – a beautiful medieval monastery on the banks of the Akhuryan River.

  • Harichavank Monastery – one of Armenia's most important spiritual and educational centers.

  • Yereruyk Basilica – an impressive early Christian basilica dating from the 4th–5th centuries.

  • Kumayri Historic District in Gyumri, preserving elegant 19th-century architecture built from black volcanic tuff.

One of Shirak's greatest historical treasures is the nearby ruins of Ani, the magnificent medieval capital of Armenia. Located just across the Akhuryan River on the Turkish side of the border, Ani can be viewed from several points within Shirak, reminding visitors of Armenia's glorious past.

The province also preserves remnants of the ancient Silk Road, including parts of historic caravan routes that once connected East and West.

Gyumri – Armenia's City of Arts and Crafts

The capital of Shirak, Gyumri, is Armenia's second-largest city and one of its most charming cultural centers. Known for its warm hospitality, distinctive architecture, and creative atmosphere, Gyumri has long been home to talented artisans.

Visitors can explore traditional workshops where skilled blacksmiths, coppersmiths, jewelers, stonemasons, and woodcarvers continue crafts passed down through generations.

The city is also renowned for its museums, including:
